The Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve (Forestry Commission) is very extensive. The great egret is one of the most striking birds found there. It is like a stray (sub)tropical bird. Especially from the bird huts along the Knardijk in Lelystad, you have a good view of the nature reserve. With a bit of luck, a great egret will land right in front of you. It is wonderful to see how well this bird maintains its plumage. Amazing how it is able to turn that long neck so that it can "straighten" even the smallest feathers on its belly and chest. On an almost windless afternoon, this bird was brushing itself in very special backlight.
