soft coral @ Komodo, Indonesia by Travel Tips and Stories

Komodo National Park in Indonesia is renowned for its breathtaking underwater world. Here you’ll find exceptional soft corals in bright, neon-like colours, such as the iconic red-orange Dendronephthya. The soft corals thrive perfectly in the nutrient-rich, flowing waters surrounding the islands.

The best spots for soft coral
Batu Bolong: One of the top dive sites in the park. The walls of this large rock are covered in vast quantities of colourful soft coral.
Castle Rock & Crystal Rock: Located in the north. These reefs are teeming with gold, bronze and rust-coloured sponges and soft tree corals.
Siaba Kecil: Known for its coral gardens and beautiful overhangs where soft coral grows abundantly. Snorkelling vs. Diving

Although divers can admire the deeper soft coral in all its glory, you can also enjoy snorkelling at various spots. Well-known locations such as Pink Beach have shallow coral areas that start right off the coast.
Practical Information
Base: Boat trips and diving excursions almost always depart from the port town of Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores.
Tours: There are countless multi-day sailing trips (liveaboards) or day trips available that take you past the most beautiful coral reefs.
Currents: Be aware that the currents in Komodo can be very strong and unpredictable. Ensure your experience matches the dive site.
