The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an up to 3 meters high, annual plant from the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The flower head may have a diameter of up to 30 cm. Sunflowers are typically 1.5 to 3.5 meters high. There are even exceptional cases in which the sunflower was able to reach a height of 5 meters. A plant can produce multiple flower heads. Immature plants whose flower bud has not yet opened, exhibit heliotropism: daytime running flower bud on sunny days with the sun. At night the flower button returns to the eastern state. This daily movement is accomplished by uneven growth / elongation of the flowering stalk. A sunflower namely no pulvini (leaf pads)! By the time the flower opens, stiffens the flower stem in the eastern position. Thereby pointing blooming sunflowers throughout the day to the east; their heliotropism is over. I associate sunflowers with Vincent van Gogh. The yellow color gives a cheerful and summery atmosphere.
