The call of the godwit is its own name, a loud and clear 'gruttooo, gruttooo'. The godwit is the icon of the Dutch peat meadows, its main breeding ground. Nowhere in Europe do so many godwits breed as in the Netherlands.
Chosen by the Dutch public as a national bird in 2015, the godwit is a large, slender wader with long legs and a straight beak.
