Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.
Move your phone gently from side to side. Holding it still or waving it around quickly does not help.
Make sure there is enough light. In a dark room your phone has nothing to lock onto.

About ‘A free flight over the Grand Canyon’ by Kim de Vries

Two birds fly freely above the Grand Canyon, whilst behind them the last dark clouds of a summer storm slowly drift away. Shortly before, there had been heavy rain and thunder. This gave the wet rock particularly deep, warm colours, whilst the dark sky lends the landscape an almost dramatic atmosphere.

During my journey through the American West, I came across this special moment after the storm. Whereas the weather had initially been turbulent and overwhelming, an almost serene scene then emerged. The two birds moved effortlessly through the air, high above the enormous canyon.

It was precisely that contrast that moved me: the power of the storm set against the freedom of the birds. The dark sky, the colourful rock layers and the small silhouettes in the distance together tell the story of a landscape that is constantly changing.

With this photograph, I wanted not only to capture the impressive beauty of the Grand Canyon, but above all the sense of freedom and space that one can experience there. An image that draws your gaze upwards and then endlessly into the canyon.

The deep earthy tones of the wet rocks and the dark stormy sky lend the work a warm, powerful feel. An atmospheric photograph for anyone who loves nature, adventure and the impressive landscapes of the American West.
