This spur-winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus) searches for food on the dry banks of the Bitang Bolon.
The Bitang Bolon is a river that flows into the Gambia River. This is one of the best places in West Africa to spot birds. Early morning, when it is not yet too hot, is the best time of day to go out. This is also when the light for photography is at its best. And because Gambia is close to the equator, you have to be quick. After all, it doesn't take long for the sun to rise again.
What I personally really like about the image is that the lapwing is framed by two mud banks on either side of a stream. It is completely windless and therefore the water is completely ripple-free. This clearly highlights the bird as the subject. The colours of the photo are earthy and warm. The colour palette is limited. This gives a calm image, but is still interesting thanks to the composition.
