A view of the woods near Barbizon, Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch, 1900
The artists' colony of Barbizon was located near the forest of Fontainebleau, southeast of Paris. The painters of Barbizon were of great influence on the Hague School. That's why Weissenbruch made his only trip abroad - he was 76 years old! - a pilgrimage to this place. He painted the characteristic birch forest, in which a painter leaning against a rock is sketching.
