The atalanta or admiral butterfly is one of the most common butterflies in Belgium and the Netherlands.
It is a striking migrant butterfly with a wingspan of 5-6 cm.
The eggs are deposited one by one on the stinging nettle.
The ground colour is yellowish grey to black with yellowish white spots on the sides.
They overwinter in southern Europe and migrate north in spring.
They feed mainly on nectar, but also on tree sap and rotting fruit.
