Balos beach is a secluded beach in the far northwest of Crete. It is called the most beautiful beach in Crete. The lagoon is located in a bowl-shaped bay and the colours of the sea water vary from azure blue to green. The beach is very difficult to reach. From the village of Kalyviani an unpaved road leads to the peninsula. The road is about 10 km long but count on a driving time of 45 to 60 minutes. The road can be prepared with an ordinary car if you drive slowly and carefully and if it hasn't rained recently. Once at the end of the road you have to walk a bit more and then walk down a few hundred steps. At the end of the day at the beach you can really enjoy yourself. Make sure you arrive early and then you have the beach largely for yourself. Despite its remote location, it gets crowded later in the day.
