At 4049 meters, Piz Bernina is the highest mountain in eastern Switzerland (in the canton of Graubünden) and the easternmost four-thousander in the Alps. Together with the Piz Palù and the Bellavista, among others, this mountain is part of the Bernina massif and is one of the most dangerous mountain peaks in the Alps where deaths occur every year. At the foot of the Piz Bernina is the famous village of Pontresina, known for the cross-country skiing areas there.
Through this area also runs the Berninabahn, a railroad in the south of the canton of Graubünden. It connects St. Moritz in Switzerland and Tirano in Italy, and is part of the Rhaetian Railway. The Berninabahn includes 13 tunnels and galleries and 52 viaducts and bridges. In 2008, this railroad, along with the Albula Railway, was placed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO. It is named after the Bernina massif and the Bernina pass.
