Between the mountains and the clouds

by ReBlick

A mighty mountainside rises above the dark forest, whilst mist and low-hanging clouds drift through the valley. They obscure parts of the landscape, blur its contours and allow other areas to reappear briefly.

What fascinates me most about mountain landscapes is just how much the weather can alter their appearance. A familiar slope can appear completely different within a matter of minutes. Here, it was the mist moving between the forest and the mountain that continually rearranged the clear layering of the landscape.

The photograph combines the solid, tranquil form of the mountain with the movement of the clouds. The dark forest in the foreground forms a frame, whilst the lighter patches of mist create depth and draw the eye towards the mountain. The understated colour scheme of muted greens, greys and dark forest tones allows the atmosphere itself to become an essential part of the motif.

As a large-format wall hanging, the photograph has a distinct presence without dominating the room with bold colours. The natural, understated colour palette and the sense of spatial depth are particularly well suited to calm, minimalist interiors and materials such as wood, stone or linen.
