Hidden in the mist

by ReBlick

A thick mist hangs over the mountainous landscape, revealing only a small part of the mountainside. The summit emerges from between the light layers of mist, whilst the dark forest at the bottom of the frame almost completely vanishes into the atmosphere.

I am particularly interested in those moments when a landscape does not reveal everything about itself. The mist strips the mountain of its usual size and clarity. Instead of a classic panorama, only individual shapes and planes remain – just enough to hint at the space beyond.

Whilst I was taking this photograph, the landscape was constantly changing. Mist swept across the slopes, obscuring contours only to reveal them again a short time later. The image captures one of these fleeting states: a moment between appearing and disappearing.

The almost monochrome colour scheme of white, grey and very dark green further simplifies the subject. As a wall hanging, this creates a calm, clear effect, whilst the visible mountain between the layers of mist forms a strong visual focal point. Particularly in minimalist and natural interiors, the motif can take up a lot of space without dominating the room itself.
