An elderly batik artist blows on her "canting" filled with hot wax (a kind of pen for hot wax), so that the wax is not too hot for the cloth she is applying the wax to. When the whole cloth is filled with the pattern, the cloth is dipped in a bath of textile paint, and then dried. It is then dipped in a hot bath which washes away the wax, revealing the empty areas where the wax has been. Depending on the complexity of the pattern, this process can be repeated several times, with a different color each time.
