A portrait of wildflowers - the quiet beauties of nature

Delicate, radiant, full of grace - the cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) is one of those wild plants that don't have to be loud to be noticed. Its deep blue, which shimmers almost purple in the morning sun, looks as if it has been painted - as if an artist had placed a single spot of sky colour in the middle of the lush green. This macro photo shows the cornflower in all its splendour: delicate, symmetrical and full of life. You can recognise the fine pollen on the stamens, the velvety surface of the petals and the small details of the green-purple bud - captured with the interplay of light and sharpness.

The cornflower used to be a typical companion of grain fields, but due to the intensification of agriculture it has become rare in many regions. This makes every discovery all the more precious - especially if you are lucky enough to photograph them undisturbed, as is the case here. The photo was taken on an early summer's day when the light was still soft and the background blurred into a harmonious green - an ideal motif for nature and macro photography.
