About ‘Boats on the line, Trincomalee’ by Marald Bes

Off the coast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka a row of fishing boats lies at anchor, right on the line where shallow water turns deep.

They are spaced so evenly that they form a dotted line across the frame. Up close they are ordinary wooden boats; from this distance they become marks.

The water below runs in three bands. At the bottom yellow and opaque, sand stirred up close to the beach. Above it a strip of clear turquoise. Behind that the deeper blue-green where the boats sit.

Those transitions are not sharp but run into one another, with a dark sandbank lying like a shadow under the surface.

The sky takes the upper half: saturated blue with thin cirrus standing in it like brush strokes.

Warm, bright and windy.

On a wall this brings blue and sand colour in equal parts. It suits light rooms, wood and rattan, and it is calm enough to hang above a sofa or a bed without demanding attention.
