About ‘Breakwater on Vlieland’ by Arthur Batenburg

Like a long line of stone, the breakwater cuts across the exposed mudflats. From the sturdy basalt blocks in the foreground, your gaze is naturally drawn to the vanishing point on the horizon, where water, sky and land almost merge into one another.

It is low tide. Around the breakwater, mudflats, shell banks and shallow channels lie exposed, whilst small pools reflect the last light of the day. Above the mudflats, the sunlight casts a warm, golden-yellow glow, which contrasts beautifully with the cool blue and grey hues of the sea and clouds.

A few seagulls glide above the landscape, enhancing the sense of space and freedom. The breakwater itself forms the powerful focal point of the composition: built by humans to control the water, but now fully integrated into the rhythm of the tides.

A typical Vlieland scene, in which silence, endlessness and the ever-changing light and sky of the Wadden Sea come together.
