Siddhartha Gautama Buddha was a spiritual leader on whose teachings Buddhism is based. According to Buddhist tradition, he lived in Nepal and India from about 450 BC to about 370 BC. Modern historians suggest ca. 480-400. According to religious lore, Gautama Buddha achieved complete and full enlightenment, Buddhahood.
Gautama Buddha is also called the Sakjamuni Buddha and was born as Siddhartha Gautama. The name Siddhartha means: whose purpose is accomplished or whose every wish is fulfilled. He is often called (the) Buddha for short. Buddha means he who is awakened (enlightened). The title Buddha is given to one who on his own strength, without a teacher, has discovered the Dhamma (the truth, the natural ordering of things) and attained enlightenment. According to tradition, there have been a number of other Buddhas before Gautama Buddha (a certain list mentions 28 Buddhas). Within Vaishnavism, Buddha has the status of the ninth avatar of the god Vishnoe.
