About ‘Chinatown San Francisco’ by Thomas Bugdoll

There are probably few neighbourhoods that are as well-known far beyond the city's borders as Chinatown in San Francisco.
San Francisco Chinatown has existed since the middle of the 19th century. Around 1850, cheap but willing workers from Asia - and especially China - were brought to the USA to help with the construction of the transcontinental railway or as miners during the newly ignited gold rush.

Chinatown is quite centrally located in the city centre, enclosed by Market Street, Van Ness Avenue and the Embarcadero - a good two blocks north of the shopping centre around Union Square. The boundaries of the district cannot be precisely delineated, but there are two streets where visitors cluster: Grant Avenue and Stockton Street, roughly between Bush Street and Broadway, so as part of a typical walking tour of the city, Chinatown is a good place to stop on the way from Market Street in the south to Fisherman's Wharf in the north. You can also get a nice view of the Transamerica Pyramid to the east from here.
