Above a sea of sakura trees stretches the red Chureito Pagoda and in the background the breathtaking Mount Fuji.
Near Mount Fuji, the Chureito Pagoda is built halfway up Mount Arakura, overlooking the town of Fujiyoshida and the famous Mount Fuji volcano.
Especially the cherry blossom combined with the red colour of the pagoda gives a magical effect.
During my tour of Japan, visiting the Mount Fuji area was a fog. We had specially booked our tour during the sakura period. Not knowing that this cherry blossom would be in full bloom this year for the first time in 1,200 years earlier than predicted.
While just before departure in the Netherlands one blossom after another was in bloom, I feared for the worst. Not being able to see the cherry blossom that symbolises spring and a new beginning. This makes it a magical period for many Japanese.
Tokyo by now was no longer shrouded in pink blossom, but when I saw the Chureito Pagoda enveloped in dozens of sakura trees from the train, my wish had come true.
With Mount Fuji in the background, the setting sun creating a magical effect, this is one of the most beautiful moments in Japan for me.
