About "Circulation in a monastery garden"

by Margot van den Berg

About the artwork

In many French cities there is a monastery with a church. And in fact always the monastery building contains a monastery garden. A garden enclosed by the building, often with a symmetrical garden layout.

In Toulouse there is the Jacobin monastery, its garden is shown in this picture. It is a garden with a pattern in box hedges enclosed by a gallery. A walkway with the cloister wall on one side and a wall with pillars on the other.

The garden is a place for stillness. For coolness in the hot summer. A quiet oasis in the busy city.

The pillars give a beautiful pattern. A combination of structure, light and space that caught my eye. The tranquility emanating from the row of pillars reinforces the palpable tranquility of the garden. Simplicity above all.

The decorations are different above each group of pillars, a little frivolity in the rigid patterns. The wall between the pillars invites you to sit; with your legs dangling over the side or resting against a pillar.

The photograph is an invitation to feel the peace of the garden.
