I took this picture during a weekend in Valencia, where I was completely surprised by the city's modern architecture. This image is a detail of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía opera house, designed by Santiago Calatrava. I always thought I only liked architecture when it was at least a few centuries old, but the shapes and materials of this building completely changed that perception.
As soon as I got home, I couldn't wait to load the photos and get to work with this one. The interplay of lines, textures and colours immediately drew me in. Originally, I wanted to edit it completely in black and white - something that often happens with this kind of architectural photo - but I ended up finding it much more beautiful and surreal to keep the warm tones. They give the image something alive, while the rest feels sleek and almost otherworldly. I deliberately left out the bird on the left side of the image, to still keep it a bit realistic.
The Palau de les Arts is an imposing building of more than 40,000 m² and part of the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. This work perfectly suits lovers of travel, architecture and minimalist design. Its clean lines and calm colour palette make it look great in a modern interior, such as a living room, office or studio with lots of light and space.
