About "Close-up of braided ship's cables"

by Margot van den Berg

About the artwork

Beaten rope lying at one of the last traditional shipyards in the port city of Sur in Oman. The thick rope was used when fishing at sea. On a traditional wooden boat and is now, during boat maintenance, lying in the yard.

A close-up shows well how the ropes consist of cables twisted around each other, which are braided together as larger cables to increase the strength of the ropes.

The wear and tear from use on the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, and who knows where else, is visible. Dragging through the sea, rubbing against the boat and drying in the fires the sun has left its mark. The wear tells the story of the voyages and gives the beaten rope a strong and lived-in look.

Stacked in a corner of the yard, the rope lies waiting. Will it be brought back on board for another trip or will it be discarded and replaced by a new unused rope.
