In a mysterious arrangement, two dolls stand on an old, dusty book. Dressed in traditional costumes, the couple seem frozen in a moment - but on closer inspection you notice an unusual scene: the woman is holding the man's head in her hand, as if she is preserving or even controlling a part of him. This unusual detail lends the scene a dark, almost sinister note that casts a spell over the viewer. It is a game between love, possession and perhaps loss, which is reflected in the rigid pose of the figures.
The book, which serves as a pedestal, reinforces the impression that these figures are telling stories - stories that are deeply rooted in the past and tradition. The finely embroidered costumes, the slightly faded colours and the dramatic play of light and shadow lend the scene an aura of timelessness and melancholy. It is almost as if the puppets are from a long-gone theatre play, in which joy and tragedy lie side by side.
