Delfshaven, Rotterdam, The netherlands
Delfshaven is a management committee area of the municipality of Rotterdam. Delfshaven had 75,835 inhabitants on 31 July 2017 and has an area of 5.80 km². Delfshaven was originally part of Delft. In 1795 it became an independent municipality, to be annexed by Rotterdam in 1886.
Delfshaven was founded in 1389, when the Delfshavense Schie was dug to give the city of Delft a connection with the Maas. Since then, the ships from Delft were able to reach the Nieuwe Maas via the Delft and Delfshavense Schie. The harbor town 'Delfshaven' was created around the lock. It had the status of a 'colony of Delft'. A decline in growth took place when at the end of the Hoekse and Kabeljauwse disputes (around 1490) the Hoeks wreaked havoc. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, Delfshaven had just over 100 houses and 400 inhabitants.
