About the artwork

This picture shows the façade of an abandoned building that is marked by decay. The walls, once solid and protective, are now cracked and crumbling away piece by piece, while rusty bars block the windows. Originally, they were probably intended to keep intruders out, but today they seem like a silent witness to times gone by. The barbed wire that surrounds the upper sections of the façade in tangled strips reinforces the impression of a place that once placed great emphasis on security. Now this barbed wire itself is riddled with rust and appears to be more decorative than functional.

In contrast to this hard structure of walls and bars, the vibrant green of the vegetation stands out, inexorably making its way through. Plants entwine themselves along the walls and are in the process of taking control of this space. Nature is reclaiming what once belonged to it and covering the dilapidated façade with fresh life. This interplay of human construction and the unstoppable power of nature symbolises the transience of all things and impressively demonstrates how nature can overcome even the strongest barriers. The sight is a haunting image of the cycle of creation and decay and invites the viewer to reflect on the permanence of human constructions and the eternal power of nature.
