About ‘Dreaming of Saba from Fort Oranje’ by Margot van den Berg

I am standing at Fort Orange, one of the evidences here on St Eustatius of the Netherlands' slavery past. I am almost alone, studying the board with information about the fort and our history. Slowly, I walk past the remains of the fort. The few little buildings, each of which had a different purpose. The cannons lined up towards the sea. Strange to walk around this history on this small island which is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

I walk to the edge of the fort and see a beautiful view over the edge of the island and the sea. The deep blue sea and lighter blue sky meet endlessly far away on the horizon, there they colour beautifully with each other. The road that runs along the outside of the island disappears at a mountain among the green trees. I see palm trees, houses and the surf of the sea. In the background, I hear birds whistling.

An oil tanker lies motionless like a small island between St Eustatius and the next island just visible on the horizon: Saba. A volcanic island that is easy to see with the naked eye from where I stand.

I could look at this for hours I notice. Not much is moving. A car, a sailboat, a cloud and otherwise it's quiet. An open view to dream away at.
