Between Augustus Bridge and Carola Bridge lies the famous Brühl's Terrace, also known as the "Balcony of Europe". The former fortress has been open to the public since 1814 and is an ideal destination for a stroll. Brühl's Terrace is an approx. 500 metre long terrace promenade in the middle of Dresden's Old Town and is considered one of the most beautiful promenades in Europe. In the centre of this photo is the Octagon (also known as the "Lemon Squeezer"), the art gallery of the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.
Dresden is the capital of the Free State of Saxony and the second largest city in Saxony after Leipzig and the twelfth largest city in Germany.
The Frauenkirche, Zwinger and the opera house named after its architect Gottfried Semper are probably the most famous sights in the metropolis on the Elbe.
The name "Florence on the Elbe" became an epithet for the city of Dresden at the beginning of the 19th century. The title was originally intended to honour Dresden's art collections and its architecture, but today it is also used in connection with other similarities and points of contact between the Saxon and Tuscan capitals.
