During one of our drives, we came across this trio of Savannah elephants. They looked very peaceful. The young one walked well protected in the middle and was clearly experimenting with his/her trunk. Very funny to see. When they are so young, they are still drinking from their mother, but are also already trying to drink water with their trunk and pull off grass.
I am glad that locals are more committed to elephant conservation than before and that poaching is being more strictly enforced. Unfortunately, the ivory trade is still not banned.
Yet they remain vulnerable animals, especially in the dry season, they struggle, needing lots of food and plenty of water (up to 160 litres a day!). Not infrequently, they plunder farmers' fields, causing them great damage. This, of course, does not make them any friends.
