Photographed this mother wren with her young in Friesland early in the morning in June. It was pushing for the little ones to get under her wings, as there were five young and actually only four could fit under her. So I had to take turns. On the one hand, the young were already very tough and independent, walking through the low water as if they were looking for food. But on the other hand, they also found it nice and safe and warm to sit for a while under the wings of their mother. For this, the mother avocet has to bend her blue-grey legs and sit down. Coots are beautifully elegant birds to behold, especially with the slender, upward-curling bill. Towards other birds (including their own species), however, they can be quite intolerant and aggressive.
avocets are not an endangered species, but are gradually declining in numbers.
