While staying in Singapore for work, I had picked a number of architectural locations to photograph in advance. One of these was the Esplanade, Theatres on the Bay, an iconic building on Marina Bay known for its distinctive structure and also called the 'durian' by locals because of its prickly shape.
What fascinated me immediately was the rhythm of the triangular panels and the play of light and shadow created by the sun sliding across the surface. The repetition in the structure and the graphic power of the design make this a visually intriguing subject. I deliberately chose a composition where the lines carry your gaze through the image, and where the abstraction is almost hypnotic.
As always, I edit my photos at home at my desk, where I have the peace and tools to complete the image. With a large screen, a fast computer and my Wacom tablet, I was able to finish the picture exactly as I envisioned it. For this version, I chose a black-and-white edit, as it brings out the clean shapes and the contrast between light and dark even better.
An ode to modern architecture, captured in a moment of stillness and precision.
