About ‘Evening light in the vineyards’ by Marcel Hechler

On this October evening, I’d just wanted to pop out for a moment after work – but ended up staying until the sun was almost touching the horizon. The narrow path here runs alongside the Enz loop near Mühlhausen, close to an old dry stone wall made of shell limestone, typical of the Felsengärten vineyards.

Just as I stopped, the low-hanging sun broke through the vines in a clear beam. The warm light bathed the path, making the stones glow and the tall grasses at the roadside light up. Down in the valley lies Mühlhausen an der Enz, a district of Mühlacker; behind it, the hills fade into the evening mist – a peaceful autumn evening, the sort that only occurs during this golden hour.

What drew me to this scene was the interplay: the austere, man-made wall on one side, the wildly overgrown meadow on the other, and in between a path leading straight towards the light. For me, the image conveys tranquillity – and the promise of an evening after work when you simply don’t have to do anything.

On the wall, this warm light is particularly effective in spaces designed for relaxation: above the sofa, in the bedroom or in the hallway – wherever a picture is meant to bring the day to a gentle close.
