About ‘Where Mont Blanc is hidden’ by Marcel Hechler

Val Veny lies right at the foot of Mont Blanc, and on this summer’s day, the highest peak in the Alps hid behind a cloud just as I was about to take the shot. What remains is this view: two mighty rock towers forming a gateway, with a remnant of glacier between them, from which a narrow waterfall cascades down into the valley.

In the foreground, the dark coniferous forest; above, the rich blue sky and drifting clouds — everything that defines high mountains in summer.

It was precisely this concealment that captivated me: the fact that the mountain does not need to display its grandeur to possess it. If you look a little longer, you’ll spot the delicate waterfall in the centre of the picture and the patches of snow among the scree.

A picture for spaces where you want to take a deep breath — above the sofa, in the stairwell, wherever clarity does you good.
