Graffiti is very vulnerable because most works are temporary and subject to external factors such as weather conditions, vandalism and rapid removal by authorities or new artists.
Illegal graffiti in particular is often applied quickly and can disappear just as quickly.
The peeling layers of paint show a story of transformation over time.
Through the traces of decay, fragments of different artworks become visible.
By observing the traces of decay, I discover new forms and expressions that I appropriate with my photo camera.
I isolate a detail until I am left with a harmonious composition.
Close-up creates abstraction of the subject, yet I do not consider my photography to be purely abstract. The attentive observer recognises the traces of decay.
This work looks particularly good in a minimalist space and can also be excellently combined with other work from the EXPO92 album to form a diptych or triptych.
