About the artwork

Félix Vallotton, born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1865, was a painter and printmaker closely associated with the Post-Impressionist movement. After moving to Paris in 1882, he studied at the Académie Julian, where he met other avant-garde artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis. Vallotton's works were characterised by bold compositions, simplified forms and the use of flat colours, which often featured graphic elements.

His woodcut series, which he began in the 1890s, are particularly well known. These works are known for their strong contrasts, clear lines and often eerie or enigmatic motifs. As a member of the Nabis, an avant-garde artists' group in Paris, Vallotton endeavoured to renew painting by synthesising various artistic influences such as Japanese prints, symbolism and decorative art.
