Floating villages can be found all over Vietnam. Especially Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam is famous for floating villages. There are over 2000 small islands here, but most of them are either uninhabited or uninhabitable. Nevertheless, there are over 1600 people here, all living in floating villages and thus on the water of the sea. On these floating villages the whole social life takes place. Here you learn in schools, deposit and withdraw money in banks, drink in bars and small supermarkets provide you with all the necessities of life.
In the evening it gets noisy in the floating villages, because there is no electricity supply except for the diesel generators. However, many families cannot afford this luxury, because diesel is not cheap in relation to the income of the inhabitants. People have to pay for everything that does not come from the water. Therefore, fish, all kinds of seafood and many kinds of algae are on the daily menu of the villagers. Fishing is also the main income of the people living here, so almost every family owns a boat.
