Hulst was nearby and the canals were an excellent place to fish. Something Pieter Ringoot did quite often. It was also an ideal time to go out with the family. Therefore, the people in this impressionist painting are all family members of the painter.
The painting was not painted on the spot. On the basis of various sketches and studies that were made on location, it was carefully composed in the studio in Lebbeke.
Galerie Ringoot is a homage to the work of the Belgian painter Pieter Ringoot (1921 - 2011) and the Dutch illustrator, writer and painter Hans Sturris.
