Paulus Potter was the first painter to give Dutch cattle the lead role in his work. In this painting, they are four cows. They stand out sharply against the dark cloudy sky. Their heavy bodies cast dark shadows. The sinewy beasts are also so impressive because Potter chose a low vantage point.
