The medieval castle IJsselstein once stood in IJsselstein, which was demolished after years of decay in 1887. Only one tower, the Tanner's Tower, has been preserved. This is a gate in that tower. It is not the main entrance, but is located around the corner on the right - at the time of the photo quite hidden by a path and a fence. I don't know anything else about this gate. It looks medieval, but I suspect it's from later on, maybe even from the 19th century.
The Tanner's Tower is a national monument.
This photo is part of the series Modern History and therefore largely kept in black and white.
