The Goðafoss is one of the bigger waterfalls in Iceland. It is located in the district of Mývatn in Northern Iceland. The water of the Skjálfandafljót River falls 12 metres over a width of 30 metres, and the Goðafoss is divided into a few pieces by rocks.
Where does the name Goðafoss come from? In the year 1000 the Alding decided to recognize Christianity as the national religion (at least outside the house; inside the house they were still allowed to worship the old gods). The creator of this construction, the law speaker Thorgeir Thorkelsson, who passed the Goðafoss on his way to his home, threw his pagan idols in this waterfall as a sign of his conversion. Hence the name Gods Waterfall.
Partly through a path you can walk down and get closer to the waterfall. Nice point of view for taking the picture.
