About the artwork

Tafelbergheide is a picturesque heathland in the province of North Holland, the Netherlands. Tafelbergheide is named after a small hill in the area, Table Mountain, which rises about 36 metres above sea level.

Tafelbergheide is characterised by its open heathland, dotted with patches of forest, sandy areas and small pools. This varied landscape provides a habitat for a variety of flora and fauna, making it a popular spot for nature lovers, bird watchers and walkers.

The moorland is home to a variety of plant species, including heather, juniper and various grasses. It also supports a range of wildlife, including deer, rabbits and numerous bird species, making it a valuable area for biodiversity.

Table Mountain Heath has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to prehistoric times. There are ancient burial mounds in the area, indicating that it was used as a burial site in the Bronze Age. The heathland has also historically been used for grazing cattle and as a source of peat.

Today, Table Mountain Heath is a popular destination for outdoor activities. There are numerous hiking and cycling trails that allow visitors to explore the area and enjoy its natural beauty. The hilltop of Table Mountain is a particularly popular spot for picnics and offers a great vantage point to enjoy the view.

Table Mountain Heath is managed as a nature reserve, with efforts to preserve its unique landscape and biodiversity. This includes managing the growth of trees and shrubs to prevent them from overgrowing the heathland.
