At the time I took this picture, I was living in Haarlem. A city I know well, but which still manages to surprise me. It was a Sunday evening, and as is often the case at that time, a fine calm hung over the city. Hardly any traffic, few people on the streets, just the silence, the water and the light.
I had my camera with me, as always. Photography is my passion, and I try to capture moments as I experience them. This time, it was the blue hour that drew me: that brief moment at the end of the day when the sky takes on a deep, cool hue and the city is bathed in soft, diffused light.
Along the Spaarne, the historic buildings looked beautiful. Their reflections in the water were almost perfect, and the colours in the sky completed the picture. I set up my tripod, took my time, and waited until everything was right. No rush, no pressure, just look, feel and capture.
At home, the second part of the process began: selecting and editing the photo so that it is suitable for my shop at Werk aan de Muur. This requires attention, but I enjoy doing it. If the end result matches what I felt at that moment, then I know it's right.
A piece of Haarlem, as I saw and experienced it. Perhaps it will bring the same peace to your wall.
