Heaven in boiling water – Yellowstone

by Frank Schröter Photography

White clouds are reflected in the calm waters of a steaming thermal landscape in Yellowstone National Park. Between the sky and the reflection lies a narrow horizon of dark coniferous forests and rolling hills. Fine veils of steam drift across the water, lending the vast landscape a tranquil, almost ethereal quality. Small features on the surface break up the reflection, revealing that this apparent stillness is accompanied by natural movement.

The photograph thrives on the interplay of cool blue tones, bright clouds and the dark forest edge. The portrait format guides the eye from the reflected sky in the foreground, past the bands of steam, out into the open landscape. Thus, distance and proximity, clear contours and soft transitions come together in a single image.

This original photograph by Frank Schröter depicts Yellowstone as a landscape full of contrasts: water and warmth, forest and open sky, tranquil expanses and rising steam. The photograph has been individually developed and retouched to bring out the light, colours and fine textures. As a wall hanging, the image brings a calm, airy atmosphere to living rooms, studies or places of relaxation, and invites you to rediscover the details of the reflection time and time again.
