Historic coloured photograph from 1903 of children on their way to school on a country road in Baarn. on an old postcard
Baarn is located in the centre of the Netherlands on the Utrecht side of the border between the provinces of Utrecht and North Holland, on one of the few rivers from source to mouth on Dutch territory, the Eem. From as early as 8000 to 4500 BC, humans have occupied the area around the river. Evidence for this has been provided by several thousand pieces of flint, hearths and pile pits found during four archaeological surveys. These finds of an Old and Middle Stone Age bivouac site were found in 1988 during the construction of De Drie Eiken industrial estate.
