About "Hooge Veluwe"

by Pictures by Van Haestregt

About the artwork

The Veluwe is a predominantly forested tract of land in the Dutch province of Gelderland, and a COROP area and a former quarter and land chiefdom of the Duchy of Gelre.

The Veluwe measures about 1,000 km². Unlike the old quarter, the Veluwe has no clearly defined fixed boundaries. Broadly speaking, the region is enclosed between the IJssel valley, the Veluwerand lakes, the Lower Rhine and Gelderse Valley. An area covering 912 km² has been designated a Natura 2000 site.

Large parts of the Veluwe consist of moraines from the Saale Ice Age. North of Rheden, in the Veluwezoom National Park, near the Rozendaalsche veld is the Signal Imbosch, which at 110 m is the highest point in the Veluwe, the highest lateral moraine in the Netherlands and the highest point in the Netherlands outside South Limburg and the Caribbean. At 107 metres, Torenberg near Apeldoorn comes second. The northern part of the Veluwe includes the Leuvenhorst drift sand area and the Leuvenumse Bos; near Apeldoorn is Crown Estate Het Loo, which at 10,400 hectares is the largest estate in the Netherlands. National Park De Hoge Veluwe is located in the south-west of the Veluwe and, at 5,400 hectares, covers less than one-twentieth of the Veluwe.
