The large and slender-looking cattle reach a shoulder height of 1.38 - 1.48 m and weigh 600 - 950 kg. The appearance of the steppe cattle is adapted to their natural habitat, the sunny steppe: They have a blue-black skin to protect them from UV radiation and a light-colored coat that better reflects the sun's rays. The original long-horned cattle dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. It was created by crossbreeding with tamed small short-horned cattle and the wild primeval cattle living in Hungary.
It probably acquired its present appearance in the 18th/19th century. After about 9 months of gestation, calves are born in spring and early summer. In the past, Hungarian Steppe cattle were kept as domestic animals throughout Eastern Europe. They provided milk, meat and were also harnessed as work animals. Today they belong to the endangered domestic breeds and are rarely kept economically.
