Flamingos have a length of 140 to 175 centimetres, including the head and neck. As with many other animals, the males are larger than the females. The eyes are small and have a light yellow colour.
Flamingos have particularly long legs and a particularly long neck. They are real food specialists, using a special filtering mechanism in their bill to filter small food particles out of the water. They live mostly around salt lakes, where they often have the place to themselves. The food of flamingos differs from species to species. Larger flamingos usually eat crustaceans, molluscs and worms while the smaller flamingos mainly eat microscopic algae.
