The kingfisher is a great experience to witness. It is a sedentary hunting bird and very patiently it keeps lurking on a branch in the water with its sharp gaze, and then retrieves its fish with a quick firm dive.
As far as I have been able to see it, it has always still achieved a hundred per cent score!
Unfortunately, the kingfisher cannot be admired everywhere in the Netherlands. Like the bee-eater, though, it is a species of bird that is quietly making its advance in our country.
By the way, the Dutch name "ijsvogel" is ridiculous, because this bird species, like any other bird, cannot cope very well with really cold temperatures.
In this picture, the kingfisher is already peering at its next prey and what did he find out? He had no less than two in its beak when he caught it. He beats the fish dry and dead on the branch to then gobble them up.
This is a phenomenal, true-to-life photo that I am proud of.
