This digital painting is an adaptation of a photograph taken on a cold spring evening during the golden hour at Myvatn, the magical lake in northern Iceland. A wonderfully whimsical landscape formed by volcanism, which therefore feels otherworldly at times, especially in this kind of light.
The sun is so low above the horizon that hills and craters cast long shadows. Other places are still bathed in sunlight. In the distance, part of the lake is still covered with ice and there is snow on the mountain peaks. At the same time, we see two clouds of steam rising from the hills on the other side. Land and water, light and shadow, heat and cold, the contrasts are touching here and together make for a fascinating picture.
