Tips for use

About ‘Like a fish in Paris’ by Geert Van Baelen

I created this digital drawing based on a photograph I took myself of a narrow alleyway in Paris. The high facades, narrow pavements and winding pattern of the cobblestones combine to form a quiet passageway where light enters only hesitantly. I used blue and red ballpoint pens to emphasise the lines of the buildings: the rhythm of windows and doors, the lanterns hanging above the street, and the subtle texture of the old stone.

Beneath the street surface, I added an unexpected element: a fish swimming under the pavement, as if a hidden water world lurks beneath the city. This creates a play between reality and imagination. The recognisable Parisian alley remains intact, but is given a second layer — a silent, dreamlike undercurrent that is only visible in the drawing.

The combination of red and blue reinforces the contrast between architecture and fantasy, between stone and water, between what is visible and what remains hidden.
