Ara is a genus of birds in the Psittacidae family (parrots of Africa and the New World) and has eight species. There are additionally nine species of parrots whose Dutch-language name is also "ara", but which are classified in other genera. Macaws are found in the tropical parts of Central and South America. Their naked, unfeathered face is particularly striking, as well as their slender wings and long tail. In the wild, they breed in hollow tree trunks.
The best-known macaw species are the Blue-yellow macaw and Green-winged macaw.
This image was taken in the southern part of the Pantanal. Three ara species were quite abundant in this area, namely the two afore-mentioned species and the Hyacinth macaw.
The hyacinth macaw is the largest flying parrot species with a length of 90 to 100 centimetres and a weight of about one and a half kilos. They have a deep cobalt blue colour, with yellow rings around their eyes and lower bill. They mainly eat seeds and various fruits.
Hyacinth macaws are very social animals that choose their partners for life.
